The dog featured on the cover of the newly published 2012 AMDA Foundation’s "Caring Canines" calendar epitomizes the difference that pets can make in the lives of long-term care facility residents.

Penny first appeared in the 2011 calendar with her special friend Sid, a resident at Cedarview Care Center in Minnesota. In that photo, Sid is singing to Penny, a ritual they both enjoyed. Sid passed away recently, but the relationship will not be forgotten.

When Sid’s daughter, Kathy Megyeri, saw the 2012 calendar and an "interview" with Penny on the "Caring Canines" Website, she was moved to make a generous donation to the foundation.

"My father is pictured [in the 2011 "Caring Canines" calendar] singing ‘You are My Sunshine’ to Penny, and he meant every word," she said. "Penny greeted him with the warmth and love that he so missed after his wife died. This photo of Dad and Penny always will hang over my desk."

Like many people who have witnessed or experienced the benefits of having animals in long-term care, Ms. Megyeri appreciated the values of this special bond.

As she explained, "Penny instinctively seemed to know that Dad was in his last weeks of life because she would jump on his bed, lay beside him, and lick his hand." Ms. Megyeri noted that when her father passed away, she not only mourned the loss for herself and her family, but she also was sad for Penny.

The calendar shows long-term care at its best, and it spotlights the true benefits of person-centered care. It is the perfect gift for staff, colleagues, families, policy makers, and – of course – dog lovers. Order yours today at www.caringcaninescalendar.comto ensure delivery for the new year.CfA
