Dr. David Smith, CMD, a medical director and physician in Texas, knew early on that his Labrador retriever, Mike, would be the perfect dog to visit with his nursing facility residents. “Labs are well known for being gregarious and trustworthy and pleasing people. Mike is a good ex- ample of his breed,” Dr. Smith said of his furry friend and occasional long-term care colleague.

Many of Dr. Smith’s residents lived rural lives or spent time hunting or fishing and had retrievers of their own. Mike’s presence triggers happy memories and gets them talking about the best times of their lives. “Those good feelings stay with them after Mike leaves,” said Dr. Smith.

Mike has another connection with residents. The 6-year-old dog has a bad leg and often limps. “This endears him to residents, as many of them have mobility challenges of their own,” Dr. Smith noted. They feel a genuine camaraderie with the big dog. They are always excited to see him, and they are disappointed when Dr. Smith has to leave him home.

Now you can meet Mike and see the experienced and popular therapy dog in action. Mike will be visiting the AMDA Foundation booth on Friday, March 9, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Come by and shake his paw. Then pick up a copy of the 2012 AMDA Foundation Caring Canines calendar at a special price.
